[Tweet “10 WordPress Tips and Tricks For Every Blogger!”]
In this article, I am trying to help our users to get it understand the not-so- common WordPress Tricks and Tips.
Here is a list of ten essential WordPress Tips and Tricks that would be primarily targeted for Beginners. Let’s get started!
#1 You can schedule the blog posts for future:
Sometimes you don’t feel the right time to publish the post, or you end up writing various posts at once (as you write so much when you are in the creative burst mode!) but want to publish them later (according to whatever period you have between the posts).
Thankfully, WordPress supports scheduling the posts to publish later. You can easily schedule how many posts you want in WordPress, all you need to do is set the appropriate time and date for the post. It will publish automatically.
There is no need to publish the posts manually, as the hosting server will execute the scheduling commands. While writing a post, there on your right is the Publish button. It contains an option named Publish Immediately.
By clicking the edit option under this header, you will see a calendar that helps you in setting the time and date to publish your post automatically. After you click OK and making all the required settings.
You will now see “Schedule for” which will give you “Schedule” button that will publish the post at the scheduled time.
#2 Use the better “pretty” permalinks:
By default, WordPress produces the “ugly” looking links, something like “http://abc.com/?s=Z”, which makes it extremely hard for the users to find your content, as it put the automatically created ID in the link (which doesn’t look good, trust me)
If you go the Settings, you can find the “Permalinks”, and then within it, You can view post name under common settings, This would make your permalinks all the more attractive.
It is important for the SEO, as when readers search the article, the search engines show the titles of the pages, so having the keywords in the title is essential for getting the hits to your website.
#3 Create hyperlinks to existing content:
Hyperlinks are used to link some text to a website (which can include the external sites or the link within your site), however, what most beginner WordPress users miss is that they can easily link to the existing content of their websites without copying the link and then paste it into the hyperlinked form.
When you click on “Insert/edit link”, there appears “Or link to existing content” and Under it with an arrow. As you select this, You would get to see a list of pages that can easily be linked by clicking the content. It will save a tons amount of time of yours.
#4 Don’t use unnecessary plugins:
When beginner WordPress users learn about the plugins feature in WordPress, they jump in excitement (yep, that happens!) and install several useless plugins all at once, believing that it will make their site look cool. However, they fail to realize that they are maltreating the impressive feature provided by the WordPress.
Installing additional useless plugins slow down the website and even take the more resources required to run the site, so if you abruptly starts to feel the slowdown in your website, then try to lessen the plugins on your website.
It’s better to use only the minimal plugins, for example, use an only single plugin for social media networks, one for SEO, one for your newsletter, and so on. NEVER use the more than one plugin for the same job.
Tip: Note: We all know that WhatsApp is one of the most important source from where you can get tremendous traffic. The number of users using WhatsApp is more than Facebook and any other social media sites!!! So check here Four WhatsApp Sharing Plugins for WordPress
#5 You can make your post “sticky.”:
If you’ve used Facebook and its Facebook pages feature, then you already know that it supports sticking the relevant post on the top of the page.
Thankfully WordPress also uses the similar feature, in which you can only make your important post “sticky”, and your readers will see this post first when they visit your site.
When you are editing your post, then see the “Stick this post to the front page” tick under the “Publish” module. You would view it at the time you click “Edit” which is very next to “Visibility: Public.”
It will help you to gain the awareness of your readers to the relevant post. For example, if you require your users to take some consideration which needs them to read the relevant post, then you can improve the probability that they will take the action by sticking it.
#6 You can quick edit your post:
You can easily quick edit your posts that are already published or present in the drafts. It is a great addition to the WordPress Tips and Tricks! No need to open the files and edit the post and waste your precious time!
For example, if you just need to change the title/ description or categories/tags or any small detail, then it doesn’t make sense to open the edit page and then publish it again!
Now you can utilize the “Quick Edit” feature given by the best WordPress developers. When you go to the “Posts” section, then pick any post that you like to edit. Then under the title option, you can see the “Quick Edit” option.
Click it; you will be various options: Post Title, Permalink, Change Categories and Tags, Published Date and Time, Allow or Disable Comments, Make it Sticky Post, Change the Post Status, Password Protect the Article or make it Private.
#7. Full-Screen Editing:
If you love to work with least disturbances, then the full-screen mode is perfect for you. Check the button screenshot below; It helps to activate this mode.
It completely encloses all non-essential tabs on the screen and left you only with the content box and a consolidated toolbar that contributes to hides and appears when you float over the page.
#8. Insert More Tag:
While it is a frequently neglected piece of the visual editor. It is handy when it evolves to display post excerpts on your blog. As you’re previously aware, if you have published posts on your blog, WordPress shows excerpts of these posts on the archives pages and home.
However, WordPress trims the excerpts anyway, and this could be in the center of a sentence. It is where the nifty Insert More tag feature seems in handy.
It allows you to mark accurately where the excerpt will close. A link that leads to the full post will be inserted where you explained the excerpt to end. There are various methods you can format this tag but remember by default it only acts for posts (not pages).
Note: The usefulness of Insert more tags relies on the theme assistance chosen by you.mostly, it is supported by some developed themes but still some do not support it.
#9. Special Characters:
Have you ever used the special characters button in Word? This button is similar to Word special character button. But, this one is more intuitive as it shows a character’s HTML and NUM codes as you hover over it:
#10. Underlines vs. Underscores:
Last but not least, When you will name files, some guys can use underscores instead of dashes. Something like this:
Wicked Way: http://www.example.com/extra_folder/file_name.htm;
Right Way: http://www.example.com/extra-folder/file- name.html
Your media files would be a pattern of this as well. In any case, it’s perfect to put it to dashes or Underlines. Why? Because Google scans at underscores as joiners. That implies it seems at it as one word.
And it is not okay for the Google search engines bots.
So, I’ve listed above the ten essential WordPress Tips and Tricks that will help you greatly if you just begin to learn the WordPress.
